IPL technology
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a light-based hair removal method, that targets the melanin (pigment) inside the hair to interrupt the hair growth cycle and prevent hair regrowth, without damaging the skin.
Just as safe, just as effective as the salon, without the price tag.
How IPL works
The light energy is transferred through the skin’s surface and absorbed by the melanin present in the hair shaft.
The absorbed light is converted to heat energy (below the surface of the skin) which disables the hair follicle preventing further growth.
Treated hairs naturally fall out over a period that can vary from a few days to 1-2 weeks depending on the individual.
Repeat every week for 12 weeks to catch each hair during its growth phase.
IPL vs. Laser
Both laser and IPL use light to heat the hair follicle, however the main difference between them is the type of light used:
Laser devices have a very small treatment window because the beam of light used in laser treatments is very concentrated.
As IPL uses a broader flash of light compared to laser, devices feature a bigger treatment window and can cover a much larger area at once, resulting in a faster treatment time.
A full treatment with SmoothSkin takes 12 weeks whereas laser takes up to 6-9 months!

Is IPL suitable for me?
IPL is most effective when there is a contrast between the skin and hair, meaning it is suitable on most hair colours and all hair types.
IPL isn’t effective on white or grey hair due to lower amounts of melanin, and red hair contains a different type of melanin which isn’t responsive to IPL. It is not suitable for use on deep skin tones or skin rich in melanin. It is possible to see results when treating darker blonde hair, but you may need a few extra treatments to get the same standard of hair reduction.
You can check your suitability for IPL using the chart below.
What does a treatment feel like?
Most people describe it as a slight tingling or warm sensation. In recent clinical trials, users rated the discomfort of a SmoothSkin treatment at just 3 out of 10. Remember, our devices have a Gentle mode that can be used for sensitive areas.
IPL FAQs
What is IPL?
That’s a great question. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a light-based hair removal method, that targets the melanin (pigment) inside the hair to interrupt the hair growth cycle and prevent hair regrowth, without damaging the skin.
Is IPL safe?
Yes, our devices are FDA cleared and are compliant with the latest Eye Safety Standards. Our advanced UV filter protects your skin by preventing damaging light to reach your skin with a 3mm glass UV filter.
What if I miss a session?
If you miss a treatment don’t worry, it happens every now and then. Just get back on track and start your treatment again.
How long does a treatment take?
You can do a full body treatment in just 10 minutes.
How long will it take to see results?
Most users notice hair reduction between 2-4 weeks. SmoothSkin devices will prevent hair regrowth as long as you keep treating it regularly. After the initial 12-week regime, you will need to do ‘top up’ treatments every 4-8 weeks depending on your hair growth rate. Results may vary for different people.
Is IPL painful?
Most people describe it as a slight tingling or warm sensation. In recent clinical trials, users rated the discomfort of a SmoothSkin treatment at just 3 out of 10. If you are a little sensitive to the treatment at first, we recommend you use Gentle Mode, which can help you get used to the experience.
Do I need to wear eye protection?
Our devices have been developed with safety at the forefront and are safe to use without the need for eye protection. However, you should never attempt to fire on to or close to the eye itself.
